Inspired by the well-established events ‘down south’, our founder Mike wanted to bring some seed swapping magic to North Tyneside. Slowly emerging from the pandemic, the time felt right to bring people together and offer something new to the local growing community.

Armed with lots of locally grown seeds, donated seeds from marvellous companies and the support of Whitley Bay Big Local ‘Small Sparks’ programme, Mike was ready for Seed Social’s first ever event in February 2023. Local expert Harry James joined to share the unique heritage and history of Carlin Peas.

Hoping for a handful of growers to pop along, Mike was delighted to have 200 people through the doors! The event space was rough and ready, but the community spirit and enthusiasm for growing made the day warm and welcoming.

Mike knew he was onto something good!
